Governor Schwarzenegger is proposing an initiative to introduce digital textbooks into schools. It will go Californias education system into the 21st century. But there is no mention in the CDTI about providing devices for reading the texts. Does it mean that students will need to have their own computers? Not every student has. Is the XO laptop cheap enough to give all students? What about a cooperation between OLPC and CDTI. Internet is a fantastic treasure chest for learning!

I help out at the YMCA as a volunteer and swim instructor. Likewise, with the Humane Society, though I don’t teach the dogs to doggy-paddle. I bought 4 of these – 2 for “overseas” and 2 for here… then gave my 2nd unit to some kids in Brazil.

We HELP people because we can HELP people – no more explanation is needed.

Play is one of the most vital way that children learn, so what if they play on their laptops? God forbid 3rd world children delight in any of the pleasures available to wealthy children…

    11. jfreetrpt says:

      excellent stuff

    12. chinaliew says:

they are two kind of people in africa,
      the starve and the medium

the medium have food to eat but lack education,
i say laptop is more vital as it feed the brain

    13. blazedale2007 says:

It was a joke. and not all hackers are terrible. Hacking applies to more than just hacking a bank account or some crap like that. So loosen up and take a joke. I reckon its fantastic to help the kids, I just reckon eating is more vital than learning, so i reckon if they want to give a hundred buck, it should be to the poor kids who are starving.

    14. chinaliew says:

yes, next time they will hack you using that pc,

and when all the pc connect together, your pc will suffer because your pc cant deal with multiple attack

    15. blazedale2007 says:

How about one laptop Per HACKER. LOL
This seem like a excellent thought, but i bet they rather play games on it instead of learn.

    16. anydrah says:

children use the computer for play… Have you ever thought about, that children learn when they play? To use the computer is as vital as learning how to read and write.
It is our task to show children, how they can use the internet for learning. Therefore is the OLPC educational the best vision to give children a chance to change their lifes.

    18. Lucreccia123 says:

Please, nobody used correctly the computer!… the childrens use the computer for play. first we need a education in books, and later one computer, or not.. no is neccesary…

    19. natalyincanada says:

There is something called Parental Control. It’s not a new concept.

    20. Leopoldo888 says:

¿Do you reckon that the problem 4 that children is access to food? The problem for them is the lack of education to prevent illnes and capacity of communication to the rest of the world.. the problem to represent their own reality inside. Give them education and when they grow up, they´ll find the SOLUTIONS THEY NEED… unless your “christian” soul prefers beggars… (sorry 4 my rudimentary english)

    21. Sk8rgrlxo14 says:

I agree! that’s what i have been saying.

    22. declan3906 says:

      Are they edible?

    23. charleshatton says:

Shocked! I was shocked by the comments that spoke disparagingly of children using computers.

Information and education are two of the greatest social equalizers known.

By offering children and adults unlimited information and world class education, both of which are available via the Internet, we can save peoples’ lives.

A laptop with an Internet connection given to the poor will be a life changing contribution for recipients.

    24. shanna9650 says:

books are better. they last longer and they can be more effectively shared. How ancient is your cell phone or laptop?

It has to be remembered that the web has information for all sorts of things that are not appropriate for children or could be detrimental to communities. Porn, scams, and information like how to ruin things with bombs or guns are also out there.

laptops for the community to share, would be better.

    25. narwd87 says:

First feed them, and then give them a laptot (that certainly is not the only way of educating a child ..).
This is a fantastic lie disguised as charity, help, humanity, etc.
